The Trauma Course was created by and is delivered by Orthopaedic Consultants and Senior Orthopaedic Registrars in response to demand from our juniors working in the Trauma and Orthopaedic setting.
We were repeatedly informed by junior colleagues that they felt unprepared to cope with the huge diversity of Trauma and Orthopaedic patients encountered whilst on call in either A+E or Orthopaedics, especially if they had recently transferred from a medical post.
With this is mind we created the ‘Trauma Course’, which is aimed at all levels from FY1 to ST2. Final year Medical students, nurse specialists (PSP, ENP) and those with an interest in trauma are also welcome.
Lectures include, how to read and describe X-rays, an overview of common Orthopaedic conditions and a specific lecture on Trauma and Orthopaedic emergencies and their management.
There are also practical small group sessions on:
- X-ray reading
- Plastering (each person performs a below elbow cast)
- Knee aspiration (on a synthetic model)
- Dynamic Hip Screw (each person has the chance to apply a DHS to a saw bone)
We are now in our 3rd year of courses and at the end of each course we ask for your feedback which helps us to improve the experience for future delegates – such as you!
We hope to see you on the next course.
Certificates will be handed out at the end of the course.
These are to verify you have completed the course and in addition record the 6CPD points achieved, the price of the course and are signed by a course Director (and therefore can be used a receipt to claim back any expenses).
